Google Maps, checked on 19 October 2026. Times are not guaranteed and change with road conditions.

All three variants run via E661/M16 and differ in the additional roads: the second adds E761/M5, and the third also R412. The difference between the shortest and the longest is ten minutes, so you do not have to choose a route in advance. Open your navigation on the day of departure and follow what it shows.

To Jajce and back is roughly 142 to 158 km, and a tour of the lakes adds about 10 km more. For fuel and the rental mileage, this is an item to count straight away in the cost of the trip. Banja Luka is our service area, and we arrange pick-up and return for your date.

How Much Does a Visit Cost for a Whole Family?

For the waterfall, fortress and catacombs it comes to 20 KM per person in the high season and 9 KM in the low season. In December, January and February the waterfall plateau is closed, so in that period only the fortress and catacombs remain, 4 KM per person in total. A family of four therefore pays 80 KM in the high season, 36 KM in the spring and autumn low season or 16 KM in winter, and children up to seven years old get in free.

According to the same price list, primary school pupils from BiH pay 1 KM per site all year round, while secondary school pupils, students and pensioners from BiH pay the low-season price all year. The AVNOJ Museum has a separate price list: adults pay 8 KM and BiH citizens 5 KM, so count it separately if you include it.

Ethnographic Collection, Mithraeum and Public Holidays

From 1 October to 28 February the ethnographic collection is open only from Monday to Friday, and in the same period you visit the Mithraeum with advance notice on +387 30 658 268. The same number is for announcing a visit to the monuments on 31 December and 1 January.

Jajce Waterfall and Sights in One Day

The suggested order goes from the centre towards the lakes: first the waterfall, then the fortress and catacombs, then the Pliva lakes and Mlinčići. The waterfall is in the town centre, and the Pliva lakes are about 5 km from the centre of Jajce. If you are running late, skip the lakes first, because opening hours limit when you can reach the monuments.

Your departure from Banja Luka is set by the opening hours. The table gives an example for three periods, with a drive of about an hour and a half and half an hour of margin for entry, so you arrive for opening.

Period1 May - 30 September
Departure from Banja Lukaaround 6:00
First stopwaterfall from 8:00, monuments open until 19:00
Period1 October - 30 November
Departure from Banja Lukaaround 8:00
First stopwaterfall from 10:00, monuments open until 17:00
Period1 December - 28 February
Departure from Banja Lukaaround 7:00
First stopfortress and catacombs from 9:00, monuments open until 15:00

If being first at the door does not matter to you, in the high season you can set off an hour later, because opening hours run until 19:00. In winter there is less room: the monuments close at 15:00, so a later departure shortens the day.

In winter you cannot walk the waterfall plateau, so the day starts at the fortress and catacombs, and you look at the waterfall from a viewpoint. The summer season gives you the longest day, but also the most expensive entry, so it pays to pick two or three attractions, not everything on offer.

The waterfall drops 20 m in the centre of the town. There are two viewpoints: one at the entrance to the town on the tufa and another below the Jajce-Banja Luka main road. If you do not want to go onto the plateau or cannot, a viewpoint is enough for the view and a photo.

How to Plan Your Time in Jajce?

Opening hours give your day its frame: in the high season the monuments are open for 11 hours, in October and November for 7 hours, and in winter for 6 hours. From that, subtract an hour and a half of driving in each direction if you plan everything in one day, and you can see how much time you realistically have left for sightseeing. In the high season that is enough for all the stops, while in winter it is wiser to pick two.

For the monuments in the centre, opening hours dictate the schedule, so put them first. Leave the Pliva lakes and Mlinčići for the end. If one thing matters most to you, give it time before everything else and fit the rest around it.

Pliva Lakes and Mlinčići

The Pliva lakes are about 5 km from the centre of Jajce. Mlinčići lie between the Small and the Great Pliva lake, also about 5 km from the town. Activities such as kayaking, canoeing and fishing are possible on the lakes, so this is the part of the day for a calmer pace after the town tour.

Mlinčići are a separate stop between the two lakes, so plan them together with the lakes, not as a separate trip.

The 2026 price list does not include entry to the lakes and Mlinčići, so we do not count them in the ticket calculation above. If you need to know the conditions of a visit, check them on the Visit Jajce portal.

If you only have half a day, the lakes are the first item you can drop from the plan, and if nature matters more to you than history, drop the fortress. That way you adapt the plan to yourself.

Jajce Fortress and Catacombs

Jajce is first mentioned in 1396, and the fortress probably existed already in the 13th century, with repairs in the 14th and 15th centuries. A panoramic view of the town opens from it, which is one more reason to include it in your plan.

The catacombs are an underground church carved into the rock, built at the end of the 14th and the beginning of the 15th century. Like the fortress, they fit into the town part of the tour and have the same opening hours.

Both stops cost 2 KM each in the low season and 5 KM each in the high season. You pay entry for each stop separately, so for two adults in the high season count 20 KM for the fortress and catacombs together, and 8 KM in the low season. In winter, when the waterfall plateau is not open, it is the fortress and catacombs that carry the day. That is why in the period from 1 December to 28 February it is better to start with them, while opening hours run until 15:00.

Jajce in Winter - What to Check Before You Go

From 1 December to 28 February the monuments are open from 9:00 to 15:00, and the waterfall plateau is closed to visitors. That means a shorter day and fewer stops, so a single winter trip fits the fortress, the catacombs and a view of the waterfall from a viewpoint, and the lakes only if you have time left.

On 31 December and 1 January the monuments are visited with advance notice, so arrange that beforehand for a New Year trip.

Winter equipment is compulsory from 1 November to 1 April under the Rulebook on Traffic in Winter Conditions (Official Gazette of BiH 83/20), and all our vehicles have it. You will find the rules, tyre combinations and markings in our guide Winter equipment in Bosnia. The Skoda Kodiaq 2026 has 4x4 and seven seats, but 4x4 does not replace winter equipment.

The times in the Google Maps table are a snapshot from 19 October 2026 and may differ in winter. On the day of departure check weather and road conditions, and keep a winter trip plan shorter: fewer stops, more margin.

Which Vehicle to Rent for a Trip to Jajce?

Choose by the number of people and your budget. Our Skoda Kodiaq 2026 is an automatic, 2.0 diesel, 4x4, has seven seats and costs 200 KM a day. For seven passengers that is about 29 KM per person for the whole day.

Two Skoda Octavia 2020 cars are also automatics with 4x4 drive and five seats, at 100 KM a day each. The Renault Captur is an automatic with five seats at 80 KM, and the Renault Clio has a manual gearbox, five seats and costs 60 KM. All prices and other models are in the price guide.

An example for a family of four in the high season: Clio 60 KM plus tickets of 80 KM for the waterfall, fortress and catacombs makes 140 KM without fuel. In the low season with the waterfall the same trip costs 96 KM, and in winter, when only the fortress and catacombs remain, 76 KM. To Jajce and back is about 142 to 158 km, and we agree the mileage per vehicle and period, so ask about it in advance.

For seven adults in the Kodiaq, tickets for the waterfall, fortress and catacombs come to 140 KM in the high season, 63 KM in the low season with the waterfall and 28 KM in winter. With the 200 KM rental that is 340 KM in the high season (about 49 KM per person), 263 KM in the low season (about 38 KM) or 228 KM in winter (about 33 KM). For two people, with a 60 KM Clio, the trip costs 100 KM in the high season, 78 KM in the low season with the waterfall or 68 KM in winter, without fuel. These calculations apply to adults, without discounts, and change if the tickets or the rental price are different for your date.

For pick-up you need an ID card, a driving licence and an address, and foreign nationals bring a passport. VAT and insurance are included in the rental price, and you can pay in cash or against an invoice. Pick-up and return are by arrangement, and we are available 0-24, so we can arrange an early start too. You can cancel free of charge up to 48 hours before pick-up; cancelling 24 to 48 hours before pick-up costs 50 KM, and cancelling less than 24 hours before or not showing up is charged at the price of one rental day. You will find everything else in our rental terms.

We rent a vehicle for a self-guided trip: you choose the order, the duration and the return, and we arrange pick-up in Banja Luka for your date.

What to Check Before You Set Off?

Before you set off, check four things:

  • the opening hours for your period, especially if you go in winter or in March and April;
  • which tickets you are buying and which price period your date falls into, with discounts for children, pupils, students and pensioners if they apply to you;
  • the route in your navigation on the day of departure, along with weather and road conditions;
  • the vehicle, and the pick-up and return time, with us.
