Driving a rental car in Bosnia and Herzegovina between November and April, and not sure the car has what the law asks for? The winter equipment Bosnia requires is compulsory from 1 November to 1 April, regardless of weather conditions, and it is more than winter tyres: the regulation allows three combinations of tyres and snow chains.

When exactly does the obligation start and end? What counts as winter equipment, how do you recognise winter tyres by the M+S marking, when do snow chains come into play and which tyres does the 4 mm rule cover? And do you know which of the three combinations fits the car you will be driving?

Renting a car in winter? All vehicles are equipped with winter equipment. For details on a specific vehicle, ask us with your dates and route.

When Is Winter Equipment Compulsory in Bosnia?

According to Article 3 of the Rulebook on Traffic in Winter Conditions, Official Gazette of BiH 83/20, winter equipment is compulsory from 1 November of the current year to 1 April of the following year, regardless of weather conditions. For the 2026/27 season, under the rule currently in force, that means from 1 November 2026 to 1 April 2027.

Do not read this period as a rule that switches on only when snow falls. The obligation is tied to a date, not to the daily forecast. Article 3 also lists exceptions for categories L, T and C, so for a vehicle from a special category, check how it is classified in its documents.

On its current page about winter equipment, BIHAMK also summarises the same period and the same three permitted combinations. No separate seasonal announcement from BIHAMK or AMS RS for the 2026/27 season was found in a check on 26 September 2026, so the date for this season comes from the current Article 3, not from a new seasonal notice.

The Rulebook also leaves room for additional measures. The competent authority can make winter equipment compulsory on a specific road or for a specific period, including outside the standard date range. If your route has a special regime, or you are heading into distinctly wintry conditions outside the regular season, check current information from the competent institutions before you set off.

What Counts as Winter Equipment in Bosnia Under the Rulebook?

The Rulebook does not reduce winter equipment to a single option. Article 3 permits three separate combinations: winter tyres on all wheels; winter tyres on the drive wheels together with chains or another traction-enhancing device; or summer tyres with at least 4 mm of tread together with suitable chains or traction devices.

Read each combination as a whole. Mixing one element from one option with another from a different option does not mean the vehicle meets the rule. Work out which combination matches the tyres actually fitted, then check that every additional element of it is ready.

In the first combination, winter tyres are fitted on all wheels. Article 3(2)a adds no separate 4 mm condition to this option, so do not carry it over from the third combination as a universal rule for every winter tyre.

The second combination allows winter tyres on the drive wheels, but together with chains or other suitable traction-enhancing devices ready for at least two drive wheels. Here the chains are not a casual recommendation but part of the combination.

The third combination uses summer tyres on all wheels with at least 4 mm of tread depth, together with chains or another suitable traction-enhancing device ready for at least two drive wheels. Here the 4 mm figure is expressly tied to summer tyres.

Winter Tyres in Bosnia and the M+S Marking

In its definition of winter tyres, the Rulebook recognises markings such as MS, M+S, M&S and Snow Winter, as well as other suitable markings listed in Article 3. When you check a tyre, look at the marking on the tyre itself and at the whole combination the vehicle uses.

Winter tyres are not the only way to satisfy Article 3, so are they compulsory? Not simply yes or no. What is compulsory is winter equipment in one of the permitted combinations. Winter tyres on all wheels meet combination A. If they are fitted only on the drive wheels, chains or other traction devices for at least two drive wheels must be ready as well, as combination B says.

Watch the 4 mm rule. In Article 3(2)c it applies to the summer tyres of the third combination, together with chains or another traction-enhancing device. It is wrong to conclude from that paragraph that every winter tyre under this Rulebook needs at least 4 mm.

In its institutional summary, BIHAMK follows the same logic of three combinations, so it works as a practical cross-check next to the primary text of the Rulebook. If the legal wording matters, give priority to the Rulebook itself.

Snow Chains in Bosnia and When You Need Them

Snow chains are not an automatic add-on to every permitted combination, but they are part of combinations B and C. There they must be ready for at least two drive wheels, or be replaced by other suitable traction-enhancing devices.

In combination B, winter tyres are on the drive wheels with chains or other traction devices ready alongside. In combination C, summer tyres with at least 4 mm of tread are on all wheels, and chains or other suitable devices again have to be ready for at least two drive wheels.

The Rulebook further states that chains or other traction-enhancing devices may be fitted outside the regular period of compulsory winter equipment when winter conditions prevail. Chains are not only a topic for November to April.

Having chains as part of a prescribed combination is different from the moment you actually put them on the wheels. If conditions call for extra traction, or there is a special order from the competent authority, follow the road signs and the official information for that road.

On a longer winter route, check before departure whether the combination on the vehicle requires chains and whether they suit its drive wheels. When renting, ask us about the specific vehicle, date and route. All our vehicles are equipped with winter equipment.

Winter Equipment in Bosnia and the 4 mm Rule

The rule of at least 4 mm in Article 3(2)c applies to the summer tyres in the third permitted combination. That combination requires summer tyres on all wheels with at least 4 mm of tread, together with chains or other traction-enhancing devices for at least two drive wheels.

The most common mistake is to lift the 4 mm figure out of that combination and present it as a universal minimum for every winter tyre. That is not what this article says. Combination A covers winter tyres on all wheels, and combination B winter tyres on the drive wheels with chains or another traction device.

If the vehicle has summer tyres and you rely on combination C, 4 mm matters together with the mandatory traction devices. If the vehicle uses a different combination, check the conditions of that option instead of transferring the rule from combination C.

For a legal check, use Article 3 of the Rulebook, and treat BIHAMK summaries as a practical reminder. Shortened formulas can change the meaning of the regulation.

Winter Equipment in Republika Srpska and the Federation of BiH

Winter equipment in Republika Srpska and the Federation of BiH rests on the same state-level Rulebook from the Official Gazette of BiH 83/20. The period and the three basic combinations do not change because you cross from one entity to the other.

BIHAMK publishes information and reminders for drivers in BiH, while AMS RS publishes institutional information for Republika Srpska. In the check of 26 September 2026, the latest seasonal notices found related to the end of the obligation on 1 April 2026, and no separate announcement for the 2026/27 season had been found yet.

That does not change the calendar framework in Article 3. For the 2026/27 season the obligation runs from 1 November 2026 to 1 April 2027. If an institution later publishes a new seasonal notice, check it before your trip.

Winter Equipment in Republika Srpska

In Republika Srpska the basic rule still comes from the state-level Rulebook. AMS RS is useful for current reminders and the state of application, especially at the start and end of the winter season. For your travel date, check the latest notice, not an old seasonal news item.

Compulsory Car Equipment in Bosnia Is Not the Same as Winter Equipment

Compulsory car equipment in Bosnia is a broader term than winter equipment. For the winter period, the law asks for the equipment set out in the Rulebook on Traffic in Winter Conditions, while other equipment a vehicle must carry is governed by other rules.

For the winter part, check the period, the combination of tyres and any traction devices, the 4 mm rule where it really applies, and the additional restrictions the competent authority can introduce for a specific road or period.

For a full check of the general compulsory equipment in a vehicle, use the relevant primary regulation or an official institutional source. Do not conclude that the winter rule is the whole list of equipment a vehicle needs.

What to Check Before Renting a Car in Winter

All our vehicles are equipped with winter equipment. Before you rent a car in winter, you can still ask about the equipment of the specific vehicle you will pick up, for your dates and route, so the check is tied to the car you actually plan to drive.

Start with your rental dates. If they fall between 1 November and 1 April, the winter equipment must match one of the legal combinations. Then say where you plan to drive, because the route can matter for a practical check of the equipment and of any special measures on the road.

Ask which tyres the vehicle has and which combination applies. If that combination needs chains or other traction devices, ask whether they are part of the arrangement for your vehicle. Do not assume equipment from the model, a photo or the time of year.

Banja Luka, Gradiska and Banja Luka Airport are our service areas, and pick-up is by arrangement. If you arrive through the airport in winter, arrange the pick-up time and ask about the winter equipment of the specific vehicle at the same time. If your flight is delayed, pick-up and waiting are arranged around your actual arrival.

If you plan to drive outside Bosnia and Herzegovina, check the rules of the other country on its official source. Do not assume the same equipment combination or period applies there.

For general rental conditions see our rental terms, and for vehicle prices our price guide. Winter equipment is a separate question to check for the specific car before pick-up.

Does a 4x4 Replace Winter Equipment?

No. Four-wheel drive does not replace the obligation to meet one of the permitted winter equipment combinations in the prescribed period. The Rulebook ties the obligation to tyres and, in two combinations, to suitable chains or other traction-enhancing devices.

In our fleet, the Skoda Kodiaq 2026 has 4x4. That can matter when you choose a model, but you still need to check the legally required winter equipment on the specific vehicle.

Whether you are considering the Kodiaq or any other car, ask before pick-up which tyres and additional winter equipment it has for your dates. Model and drive type are no substitute for that check.

For a winter route outside the city, our guide to day trips from Banja Luka may help, but check road conditions and required equipment on official sources right before you leave.

Clearing Snow and Ice Before You Set Off

Article 5 of the Rulebook provides that a vehicle can be taken out of traffic if snow or ice on it affects movement, visibility or safety. So winter preparation does not end with checking tyres and chains.

Before you set off, remove any snow and ice that could limit visibility or affect the safe movement of the vehicle. The driver needs a clear view, and no ice or snow should be able to fall from the vehicle and cause a problem while driving.

If the vehicle has stood overnight or through heavy snowfall, do this check right before departure. It is the practical side of Article 5.

Winter Equipment in Bosnia: Frequently Asked Questions

When is winter equipment compulsory in Bosnia?

From 1 November of the current year to 1 April of the following year, regardless of weather conditions. For the 2026/27 season, under the rule currently in force in Article 3, that means from 1 November 2026 to 1 April 2027.

Are winter tyres compulsory in Bosnia?

Winter tyres are not the only permitted legal combination. The Rulebook allows three options: winter tyres on all wheels, winter tyres on the drive wheels together with chains or another traction device, or summer tyres with at least 4 mm of tread together with suitable chains or a traction device.

Do winter tyres have to be fitted on all four wheels?

One permitted option is winter tyres on all wheels. Another allows winter tyres on the drive wheels together with chains or another traction-enhancing device for at least two drive wheels.

What markings do winter tyres have?

The Rulebook lists the markings MS, M+S, M&S, Snow Winter and other suitable markings from Article 3. Check the marking on the tyre itself.

When do you need snow chains?

Chains or other suitable devices are part of combinations B and C and must be ready for at least two drive wheels. The Rulebook also states that they may be fitted outside the regular period when winter conditions prevail.

Is 4 mm the minimum for every winter tyre?

Not under Article 3(2)c. The minimum of 4 mm expressly applies to summer tyres in the third combination, together with chains or another traction-enhancing device.

Does the same apply in Republika Srpska and the Federation of BiH?

The basis is the same state-level Rulebook from the Official Gazette of BiH 83/20. BIHAMK and AMS RS publish institutional information and reminders for drivers.

Does 4x4 mean I do not need winter equipment?

No. 4x4 does not replace the winter equipment obligation. In the prescribed period the vehicle must meet one of the permitted combinations from the Rulebook.

What should I check when renting a car in winter?

All our vehicles are equipped with winter equipment. Ask about the specific vehicle for your dates and route. Check the tyres, and if the combination requires chains or another traction device, ask whether that equipment is part of the arrangement before pick-up.
